Scientists use the instruments onboard TGO (ESA/Roscosmos), Mars Express, and Venus Express (ESA) Martian orbiters to study the subtleties of the planet's atmospheric composition.

One of the urgent problems in space plasma studies is the way magnetic energy, stored in the Earth's magnetotail as a result of interactions with the solar wind, turns into kinetic energy, i.e. energy of hot plasma motion. IKI scientists get closer to the answer using data of MMS mission.

Satellite data analysis shows that swamp territories in Russia are being colonized by trees. On an average, in 2001–2022 about 430 thousand hectares of forests growing on the swamp territories add annualy to the total forest area of the country.

Scientists at IKI and Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences study the heavy fuel oil spill using satellite radar data and SeeTheSea information system.

Using data gathered by Russian LEND neutron telescope onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, IKI scientists studied water ice distribution within lunar polar craters Cabeus and Galimov.

In 2024, IKI scientists and their colleagues completed the analysis of the data from the Milky Way central region deep survey and the first five all-sky surveys (2019–2022) made by Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope onboard Spektr-RG X-ray observatory.

Marcel Grossmann institutional award for the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission was presented to IKI at the opening of the "High-Energy Astrophysics Today and Tomorrow" conference on December 23, 2024

On December 19, 2024 cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Wagner installed the MVN single-unit instrument on the outside of the Zvezda Service Module of the ISS, as part of the planned EVA-63. MVN unit is a part of the space experiment MVN, aka All-Sky Monitor.

Annual all-Russian conference "High Energy Astrophyiscs Today And Tomorrow 2024", aka HEA–2024, starts on Monday, December 23 at IKI.

New model developed by IKI astrophysicists and their colleagues and based on the data of SRG/eROSITA X-ray telescope, links the bright structure seen in our Galaxy to bubbles of hot gas that emerge from star-formation regions like smoke from the chimney.
