Conference "Cosmic Gas Dynamics"
September 16–18, 2024
Space Research Institute (IKI), Moscow, Russia
From September 16 to 18, 2024, the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences will host the conference “Cosmic Gas Dynamics” in memory of Professor V. B. Baranov dedicated to the 90th anniversary of his birth.
Objectives of the conference:
Cosmic gas dynamics is a branch of science that uses methods and approaches of gas dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), radiation gas dynamics, kinetic theory of gases, as well as modern numerical methods for solving complex nonlinear systems of partial differential equations of many variables to describe various phenomena in outer space.
The objectives of this conference are 1) to review modern cosmic gas dynamics models, which are used to describe various astrophysical phenomena and objects, and 2) to discuss the difficulties of modeling real astrophysical objects and ways to overcome these difficulties.
Particular attention at the conference will be devoted to topics that were close to Professor V. B. Baranov: the study of the outer heliosphere and astrospheres of other stars, including a comparison of theory and experiment, modeling the interaction of comets and planets (including exoplanets) with the solar wind, studies of the solar surroundings, the study of the structure and flows in the interstellar medium, and studies of various types of instabilities.
This conference is a de facto continuation (many years later) of the meetings on cosmic gas dynamics, which were organized and held in Moscow with the active participation of V. B. Baranov on October 13–18, 1988, and September 13–17, 1999.
About Vladimir Borisovich Baranov
V.B. Baranov was a professor at the Lomonosov Moscow University and a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1970). He was the head of the Laboratory of Physical Gas Dynamics for over fifty years, first at the Space Research Institute and, since 1987, at the IPMech RAS.
The name of V. B. Baranov in science is associated with cosmic gas dynamics. He has beautiful pioneering results in studying flows around space objects by the solar wind and interstellar medium, studying the influence of the magnetic field on the flow pattern, analyzing the properties of space shock waves, etc. A distinctive feature of his scientific work is the natural combination of analytical methods and numerical calculations, as well as obtaining results that are verified in space experiments. He is the author of the theoretical prediction of the existence of a hydrogen wall around the heliosphere, which was then discovered using the Hubble Space Telescope.
V. B. Baranov was a multi-faceted personality with an active life position. Devoting his life to serving Science and educating the scientific generation – students and postgraduates of Moscow University, he found time for rehearsals and concerts as part of a string quartet performing complex classical repertoire, and played chess and football with passion and at a high level.
V. B. Baranov has many students who continue to develop the ideas of their Teacher in many scientific organizations in Russia and abroad. Vladimir Baranov was a bright personality who inspired everyone with his optimism and enthusiasm.
