Project "Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma"

Astronomy and Astrophysics

How many supermassive black holes are there in the Universe? How has our Universe been growing after the Big Bang? What is the nature of dark matter?

Some of these questions may be answered thanks to space X-ray astrophysical observatory Spektr-RG (aka Spektr-Rentgen-Gamma), which was successfully launched in summer 2019. Spektr-RG is a Russian project with German participation.

Spektr-RG project holds many 'firsts'. It is the first Russian spacecraft, which works in L2 libration point. One of its main instruments is ART-XC — the first Russian X-ray telescope with grazing incidence optics. It is also the first Russian project with large German part — the second X-ray telescope eROSITA.

eROSITA and ART-XC together should make a list of all massive clusters of galaxies and supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies in the observable Universe. In the video, IKI's scientists and engineers talk about the astrophysical tasks of the mission, international cooperation, Spektr-RG ballistics, and many other aspects of the project.
